liverpool university to start her first job as a vet in 1979 and is still here over 30 years on. she has seen the practice grow from a 3 vet practice working out of a shed like structure at the back of the boss’s house to everything that it is now. she worked as a mainly farm animal vet but over the years moved across to becoming a companion animal vet. she had the opportunity in 2007 to share her time with the british veterinary association where she was honoured to have the chance to spend a year representing the british veterinary profession as president of the british veterinary association. her interests outside practice include watching rugby, skiing, gardening and walking. most of her time when she is not working seems to be spent in keeping track with what her growing family are up to and helping her husband do up an old farmhouse and barns. since the formation of the kernow veterinary group in 2014, she has stepped out of daytime clinical work to concentrate on managing the veterinary business, but continues to contribute to the out of hours work supporting some of the younger members of the veterinary team. her greatest pride is to see how the practice has developed since she came to cornwall and the great work that the whole team undertakes on a daily basis. view profile view profile martyn phippen bvsc mrcvs veterinary director apart from a short spell in new zealand, martyn has worked in cornwall since he graduated from bristol university in 1987. he joined pelyn in 1996, working in what was a traditional mixed practice, where he developed his interest in companion animal medicine. he became a partner in 2005 and, following the formation of the kernow veterinary group in 2014, he took on responsibility as clinical lead at the lostwithiel surgery. he now heads up the team of dedicated companion animal vets who provide a full range of medical and surgical services and the day care of our hospitalised patients. martyn lives in lostwithiel with his wife and two sons. the family has had various pets but martyn has a particular soft spot for norfolk terriers view profile view profile andy cornelius bvsc mrcvs small animal veterinary director andy was born in cornwall and has lived in st austell for most of his life. he graduated from bristol university in 1999. his career began as a mixed vet working for 2 years in a busy mixed practice in south wales. he then spent 2 years working in a small animal hospital in cambridgeshire where he developed his love of working with companion animals. andy returned to cornwall in 2003 and soon started work as an assistant at churchend vets, near his home in st austell . in 2005 he became a partner with focus on the small animal work. following the formation of the kernow veterinary group he has continued his role as the lead veterinary surgeon at the churchend surgery. apart from leading the churchend team, he spends his time working in all areas of the practice as his interests lie in both small animal medicine and surgery. he also works actively in the provision of out of hours care for the whole kernow vet team. when not working, andy spends his time with his bvsc mrcvs veterinary director alistair graduated from bristol university in 1999. his career began in cheshire, working in a busy mixed practice. after 2 ½ years he got itchy feet and spent a year working, travelling and snowboarding in new zealand. upon returning to the uk he worked for scott-dunn’s equine clinic, where he saw more horses “than he had hot dinners”! during his time there, clients included the queen (windsor castle, hampton court and buckingham palace), prince charles and elton john. he was also regularly on duty at kempton, sandown and epsom racecourses as well as the guards polo club, the royal windsor horse show, the hambleden horse trials and point-to-points. alistair’s main interest lies in the equine side of the practice particularly, dentistry and lameness. but he can be equally as happy working with cattle, with a particular interest in the control of infectious diseases of cattle, such as bvd and johneâ’s disease. following the formation of the kernow veterinary group in 2014, alistair has been able to spend all of his time focusing on the large animal side of the business and, along with ron fraser, heads up the veterinary team of the kernow farm and equine side of the practice. view profile view profile ron fraser large animal veterinary director ron graduated from glasgow university in 1981 and after a move to cornwall, spent 12 months working in newquay. he moved to join the practice in bodmin in 1982, then known as abbott, polden and draper. following the retirement of tony polden in 1990, ron became a partner. peter abbott retired in 2005 and with the retirement of simon draper in 2010 the practice name changed to harleigh vets limited with ron as the sole principal of the practice. ron’s main interests have always been with farm animals and equine work, with particular focus on dairy health and fertility. following the formation of the kernow veterinary group in 2014, ron has been able to focus solely on the farm manager kvg renay joined pelyn veterinary group in 1985 from school as an animal care yts trainee. she went on to become the first veterinary nurse to be trained by the practice after qualifying in
